Lewis: House Appropriations Democrats block vital border security programs

WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Appropriations Ranking Republican Jerry Lewis (R-Calif) released the following statement on the failure of several critical amendments to the fiscal year 2009 Homeland Security Appropriations bill today. These amendments were blocked from passage by opposition from Committee Democrats.

“The most fundamental responsibility of government is to the security and sovereignty of our nation. The Republican amendments today to the FY 2009 Homeland Security Appropriations bill would have upheld this responsibility by providing the necessary funding and legislative authority for crucial Homeland Security programs, such as the continuation of fence construction along our southern border, checks on the immigration status of airport workers, funding for state and local Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) training, and funding for critical intelligence programs in Customs and Border Patrol and the Coast Guard.

"I am deeply disappointed that the Democrats on the Committee voted down each of these amendments, putting our country one step behind in our battle to secure our border and to ensure the safety and security of all Americans.”
