Chairman Rogers Prepared Statement on FY 2012 Military Construction, Veterans Affairs and Related Appropriations Act at Full Committee
Washington, May 24 -
“We can all agree that our nation’s service-members and veterans deserve the utmost quality of care and respect for their service and sacrifice, and it’s a pleasure to be able to support them.
“This bill funds the most pressing needs of our nation’s service-members and their families, as well as our veterans, while also acknowledging the need to rein in federal spending in a time of historic and dangerous deficits.
“The bill fully funds the construction of Department of Defense hospitals and clinics, schools and family housing, providing our military personnel with the resources to effectively advance US missions abroad and the support they need here at home. The bill also protects the health and well-being of our veterans, funding medical care, disability benefits, and education benefits.
“But in addition to adequately funding these programs, the subcommittee also made the difficult but responsible choices that eliminate excess spending wherever possible and rescind unobligated balances. Subcommittee Members and staff went through the bill with a fine-toothed comb to ensure that each and every taxpayer dollar is being spent wisely.
“I must commend the Chairman of the Subcommittee, Mr. Culberson, for showing great fiscal restraint while still providing for the necessary quality of life that our service-members and veterans truly deserve. In fact, it’s quite an achievement for the Chairman to have reduced this bill below the 2011 levels. This bill ensures that the American people, our troops and our veterans are getting the greatest value from the money spent.”
