Chairman Rogers Opening Statement on FY 2013 Defense Appropriations Bill for Subcommittee Markup

Washington, May 8 -

I would like to thank Chairman Young and Mr. Dicks for their remarks as well as their continued leadership involving important issues facing the Department of Defense. Mr. Dicks, we will greatly miss your leadership and expertise in this subcommittee as you leave us for greener pastures next year. In addition, I would like to commend the committee staff on their hard work and tireless efforts. I am pleased that this bill is a result of a bipartisan effort.

The Department of Defense bill before us today is a good bill, providing our troops with the resources they need. The base funding recommendation of $519.2 billion is $3.1 billion above the President’s Fiscal Year 2013 request of $516.1 billion; and is $1.1 billion above the Fiscal Year 2012 enacted levels. The legislation includes funding for critical national security needs, and provides the necessary resources to continue the nation’s military efforts abroad. In addition, the bill provides essential funding for health and quality of life programs for the men and women of the Armed Services and their families.

Recognizing that no department is immune from scrutiny during these difficult financial times, this bill makes responsible reductions without negatively impacting the warfighter or readiness.

I urge the subcommittee to promptly report this bill to the full Committee.
