Frelinghuysen Lauds End of State Department Freeze on Eligible Family Member Employment

Washington, December 12, 2017

U.S. Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen (NJ-11), chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, today commended Secretary of State Rex Tillerson for lifting the hiring freeze in January for Eligible Family Members of State Department employees.  U.S. diplomats have complained personally to Frelinghuysen that the freeze created a hardship for diplomats whose spouses often seek employment at the same overseas post.

“From my travels to several countries this year, I understand that the department’s ongoing hiring freeze was damaging the EFM program, leading to financial hardships for families in overseas postings, Frelinghuysen said.  “Foreign Service families are the backbone of our diplomatic corps and this hiring freeze made it more difficult to retain senior leaders and experienced diplomats.  The Secretary deserves credit for examining and reconsidering this freeze.”

Frelinghuysen had written twice on behalf of our diplomats to Secretary Tillerson to urge the immediate lifting of the freeze.
