FACT: House Republicans Voted to Keep the Government Working

March 12, 2025

Washington, D.C. – While House Republicans acted to keep the government open and working for the American people this week, Democrats and partisan reporting spread misinformation and falsehoods. Let’s clear up any confusion by walking through some of the most egregious and deceptive claims:

“Republicans are shortchanging veterans and jeopardizing their care. This legislation provides zero dollars for veteran medical services.”

  • FACT: This bill fully funds critical services and benefits our veterans rely on, including increases for the Toxic Exposures Fund and VA medical resources. It’s a new low to use scare tactics against veterans - and the bill text proves Democrats wrong.

“This bill targets Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.”

  • FACT: There are no cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, or Social Security in this bill. Rather, the CR protects these programs by ensuring their administration continues smoothly and is not impacted by the disruption and chaos a government shutdown would cause.

“This bill will raise homelessness and evictions.”

  • FACT:  No amount of Democrat spin will allow this claim to hold water. This bill provides an additional $4.6B for U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development programs, including rental housing assistance.

"This bill gives tax cuts to billionaires.”

  • FACT: This is a continuing resolution to provide ongoing government spending. There are no provisions relating to taxes whatsoever.

“The bill guts funding for programs that help feed vulnerable women and children.”

  • FACT: There is no cut to nutrition. The bill fully funds the program that provides important nutrition assistance to mothers, infants, and children. It includes a more than $500 million increase for WIC, a priority of the Trump Administration, and increases the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) by $36 million to support food packages to low-income senior adults.

“This bill is a blank check for Elon Musk.”

  • FACT: Democrats can dislike Elon Musk all they want, but that doesn’t change the fact that this clean CR - with no poison pills or partisan riders - has nothing to do with him. This bill simply keeps the government open and working for the American people.

“House Republicans are slashing major government programs and grants - this is a partisan bill.”

  • FACT: A continuing resolution, by its very definition, freezes funding levels and provisions. This means FY24-enacted language regarding community project funding (CPF) would carry forward and be repeated in this full-year CR unless “turned off.” To ensure taxpayer dollars weren’t wasted, this bill guarantees previously enacted projects, or one-time expenses, were not  repeated. Conflating the removal of already-enacted projects or one-time initiatives that were funded in FY24 bills - which will not be duplicated in this CR - as the “elimination of wide-swaths of vital government programs” is true fearmongering and directly misleading. Projects and one-time grants are not programs.

“This bill slashes resources for law enforcement and cops - so much for backing the blue.”

  • FACT: This bill strongly supports law enforcement, including efforts to keep our communities safe by curbing and deporting illegal immigrants. The Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Program maintains consistent overall funding. The only change is the removal of previously enacted FY24 CPF allocations, which are separate from main programming (see above point). Claims that the COPS Program has been defunded to zero are categorically false. Unlike Democrats, Republicans remain committed to supporting law enforcement and ensuring public safety.

“The bill will put the District of Columbia in a dire financial situation, and they won’t be able to hire police officers.”

  • FACT: For the remainder of the fiscal year, this bill holds D.C. at FY24 levels, like the rest of the federal government. Additional resources to support the District of Columbia with respect to ensuring the security of public events, as well as responding to terrorist threats or attacks, remain. The House Appropriations Committee has been assured that D.C. will continue to have a balanced budget. Given the impact a government shutdown would have on D.C. and the nation, House Republicans took steps to avert one.

Funding the federal government is a constitutional obligation, and House Republicans acted to uphold that duty. This straightforward continuing resolution ensures the government remains open and working for Americans. It maintains critical services for our constituents and provides the largest pay raise for our brave junior enlisted heroes since President Reagan. With no poison pills or unrelated riders - the bill is simple: extend funding and certainty for the nation.

As we clarified the record above, so did House Democrats with their vote yesterday: They OPPOSED funding for veterans, child nutrition, help for low-income seniors, housing programs, the military, public safety, and more. Instead of supporting their communities, they voted for a government shutdown.

Will Senate Democrats join them?
