America 250: Honoring Our Past. Investing in Our Future.
Washington, D.C. – The Constitution begins with three enduring words: "We the People." They remind us that America has always been a shared endeavor – one generation building upon the work of another. As our nation marks its 250th anniversary, we celebrate the countless Americans whose vision, sacrifice, and determination built the strongest, freest nation in history while recognizing our own responsibility to prepare it for those yet to come. From securing our independence and feeding a young country to connecting a continent, pioneering scientific discoveries, defending freedom, and expanding opportunity – each chapter of our nation’s story has invested in America's future. As we honor the last 250 years, we also look toward the next 250. The Fiscal Year 2027 appropriations bills carry that responsibility forward through investments that strengthen our national security, grow our economy, support American families, and help ensure the next era of the United States is even stronger, safer, and more prosperous than the last.
Join us as we reflect on 250 years of American achievement – and the Article I investments that will help shape the next 250:
Celebrating 250 Years of Freedom: "For 250 years, every generation of Americans has helped build a stronger nation. They defended our freedom, cultivated our land, expanded opportunity, pioneered discovery, connected communities, and laid the foundation for the prosperity we enjoy today. As our nation commemorates its semiquincentennial, the work of Congress remains rooted in that same enduring responsibility: investing in the priorities that keep America safe, strong, and prepared for the future. The Fiscal Year 2027 appropriations bills reflect that commitment. Across every corner of government, these measures strengthen national defense, support American workers and families, modernize critical infrastructure, advance scientific discovery, preserve our natural heritage, uphold constitutional responsibilities, and invest in the institutions that will shape America's next 250 years."
Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies: "For 250 years, American agriculture has helped shape our nation's story. From the farms that sustained the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War to the producers who continue to feed America and the world today, our agricultural heritage remains central to our economy, security, and way of life. Building on that legacy, the FY27 Agriculture Appropriations bill invests in America's farmers, ranchers, and rural communities. It strengthens agricultural research, protects animal and plant health, supports food safety inspections, and reinforces Buy American policies that prioritize products grown and produced here at home. Further, it supports rural development by expanding broadband access, strengthening critical infrastructure, and investing in the communities that power America's heartland. From the field to the family table, this legislation reflects a continued commitment to the producers, communities, and values that have sustained our great nation."
Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies: "A relentless pursuit of justice, innovation, and discovery has underpinned America for a quarter millennium. From establishing the rule of law and creating the nation's first federal law enforcement institutions to settling the frontier and pioneering breakthroughs in flight and space exploration, each generation has expanded what America could achieve. Today, we continue looking towards the next horizon. From the frontlines of law enforcement to the next frontier of space, the FY27 Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations bill invests in the people and institutions that protect our communities and expand human knowledge. It strengthens law enforcement, combats violent crime and fentanyl trafficking, advances scientific research and weather forecasting, and supports NASA as America continues leading the world in exploration and innovation. From safer streets to the next era of space exploration, this bill invests in the capabilities that will define our golden age."
Defense: "George Washington crossing the Delaware remains one of the defining moments in American history – serving as a powerful reminder that liberty has always depended on those willing to defend it. From the Continental Army to today's all-volunteer force, freedom is never free, and it can never be taken for granted. The FY27 Defense Appropriations bill builds on the necessity of eternal vigilance and strength. Through historic investments that rebuild military readiness, accelerate the procurement of next-generation aircraft, ships, submarines, and munitions, revitalize supply chains, strengthen America's technological edge through hypersonic weapons and autonomous systems, and deliver a well-earned pay raise for our servicemembers – we ensure America's commitment to freedom is matched by the strength to defend it. The next 250 chapters of American freedom will be written by a nation that remains prepared, capable, and strong."
Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies: "The same spirit that carried pioneers across the frontier also uilt the locks and dams, laboratories, and power systems that transformed the United States into a global leader. For generations, American innovation has strengthened both our economy and our national security. The FY27 Energy and Water Appropriations bill builds on that legacy through historic investments in American energy dominance, a modernized nuclear deterrent, cutting-edge scientific research, critical mineral development, resilient water infrastructure, and the navigation and flood control projects that power commerce, protect communities, and strengthen our national defense. By harnessing America's abundant resources and unmatched ingenuity, these investments ensure our nation continues to out-build, out-power, and out-innovate the world. Just as American ingenuity powered our first 250 years, American energy dominance will help power the next."
Financial Services and General Government: "As our young Republic took shape, Alexander Hamilton understood that sound finances, stable institutions, and thriving commerce were essential to securing America's future. Two and a half centuries later, America’s economic prowess has been powered by innovation, entrepreneurship, and the freedom to pursue opportunity. From the first merchants and manufacturers to today's entrepreneurs and small businesses, generations of Americans have upheld enterprise and strengthened prosperity. The FY27 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations bill continues that tradition by promoting fiscal responsibility, strengthening Treasury's efforts to safeguard the integrity of our financial system and counter illicit finance, supporting the Small Business Administration, enhancing oversight of the federal government, and restoring accountability at agencies like the IRS – helping ensure America's economy remains strong, secure, and competitive for generations to come. Strong markets require strong institutions, and strong institutions require accountability. This bill advances both."
Homeland Security: "When the First Congress met in 1789, one of its earliest priorities was protecting the young nation's borders, ports, and commerce – establishing priorities that would help secure a new nation and support its prosperity. While the threats have evolved since our earliest days, the mission has not: protecting the American people. From westward expansion to fiber-optic networks, the responsibility to keep the homeland safe has continually expanded. The FY27 Homeland Security Appropriations bill carries that constitutional responsibility forward through resources in border security and immigration enforcement, funding for Border Patrol Agents, enhanced fentanyl interdiction, Coast Guard modernization, stronger cybersecurity, and emergency preparedness – ensuring the men and women who protect our frontline have the personnel, equipment, and technology needed to meet the threats of today and tomorrow."
Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies: "From sea to shining sea" is more than a lyric – it is the story of America's natural heritage. Across mountains, forests, rivers, deserts, and open plains, the landscapes that define our nation have inspired generations, fueled exploration and opportunity, and become enduring symbols of the American spirit. For 250 years, our nation has embraced the responsibility of conserving these treasured places while responsibly managing the abundant natural resources that have strengthened our economy, powered our communities, and enhanced our national security. The FY27 Interior and Environment Appropriations bill carries that legacy forward through investments in active forest management and wildfire resilience, stewardship of our national parks and public lands, support for tribal communities and the Indian Health Service, and responsible domestic energy and critical mineral development. Protecting what makes America beautiful and responsibly developing what makes America strong can, and must, go hand in hand."
Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies: "America has always measured its progress not only by what it builds, but by what is possible for its people. As we reflect on our semiquincentennial, the strength of our nation has been driven by hardworking Americans whose skills, ingenuity, and determination have built thriving communities and the world's greatest nation. Our history tells that story: one-room schoolhouses grew into world-renowned classrooms. Skilled trades and apprentices built railroads, factories, and the infrastructure that connected a continent, and American doctors and researchers pioneered breakthroughs that transformed health care. The FY27 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education Appropriations bill invests in the next generation of American success. It strengthens workforce training and apprenticeship programs, expands educational opportunity through classrooms across the country, supports groundbreaking biomedical research, advances rural health care and biodefense, and helps ensure the American people remain prepared to lead the industries, discoveries, and innovations of tomorrow."
Legislative Branch: "The Constitution begins with Article I for a reason. It entrusts Congress with representing the American people and exercising one of its most fundamental responsibilities – the constitutional power of the purse. When the First Congress convened in 1789, it brought those constitutional principles to life, establishing the framework of representative government that has guided the nation for more than two centuries. As the nation celebrates a milestone birthday, the People's House remains the cornerstone of representative government, where Members advocate for their constituents, conduct oversight, debate the nation's greatest challenges, and help shape the future of the Republic. The FY27 Legislative Branch Appropriations bill supports that constitutional mission by strengthening constituent services, enhancing security across the Capitol Complex, supporting institutions such as the Library of Congress, and ensuring the legislative branch has the personnel, technology, and resources to deliver for its citizens."
Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies: "Few traditions have endured as long as the American tradition of service. Citizen-soldiers left their homes and livelihoods to defend a new nation, establishing a tradition of service that has endured for 250 years. As America's military evolved into the world's finest fighting force, so too did our responsibility to ensure servicemembers, military families, and veterans have the facilities, housing, care, and support they have earned. The FY27 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill honors that enduring commitment through investments in military construction, modernized barracks and family housing, child development centers, veterans' health care, mental health and suicide prevention, and the infrastructure needed to strengthen readiness while improving quality of life for those who serve - because America's promise to those who wear the uniform extends far beyond the battlefield."
National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs: "Since the founding of our Republic, America's engagement with the world has been guided by one enduring principle: advancing the security and prosperity of the American people. From the nation's earliest diplomatic missions to today's increasingly complex global challenges, each generation has worked to protect U.S. interests beyond our borders, strengthen strategic partnerships, and promote the values that have helped shape a freer, more secure, and more prosperous nation and world. The FY27 National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs Appropriations bill carries that mission forward through strategic, results-driven investments that strengthen America's alliances, counter the growing influence of Communist China, Russia, and adversaries, promote religious freedom and democratic values, and ensure every taxpayer dollar serves a clear purpose. Putting America first means leading with purpose – making disciplined, strategic investments that strengthen our security, advance our interests, and deliver results."
Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies: "America has always been a nation of doers. Builders who carved roads through the wilderness, connected a continent by rail, spanned mighty rivers with bridges, and constructed the neighborhoods, ports, and communities that generations have called home. For 250 years, each generation has invested in the infrastructure that expanded opportunity, grew the economy, and united a growing nation from sea to shining sea. The FY27 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill continues that tradition by investing in safer roads, bridges, and transit systems; modernizing air traffic control and aviation safety; strengthening maritime infrastructure; supporting affordable housing and community development; and improving the transportation networks that keep America moving, connected, and competitive for generations to come. The first 250 years were built by generations of Americans. The next 250 begin with the choices we make today."
The Best is Yet to Come: "For 250 years, each generation of Americans has helped shape our nation's story – expanding opportunity, defending liberty, strengthening our communities, and building a more prosperous future. The Fiscal Year 2027 appropriations bills continue that enduring tradition through responsible investments that strengthen our national security, support American families, grow our economy, uphold our constitutional responsibilities, and prepare our nation for the challenges and opportunities ahead. Celebrating 250 years of American achievement – and preparing for generations yet to come!"
