Cole, Calvert Statement on White House Defense Supplemental Request
Washington, D.C. – House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole (R-OK) and Defense Subcommittee Chairman Ken Calvert (R-CA) issued the following statement in response to the White House’s formal request to Congress for supplemental defense funding to bolster U.S. defenses, replenish weapon stockpiles, pay troops in harm’s way, and ensure the resources necessary to meet evolving national security challenges and needs. The $87.6 billion package was officially transmitted to the committee for review today:
“Congress has a constitutional obligation to provide for the common defense, and we must always sustain our military with the tools and capabilities needed to defend America in full force against all threats. Delivering a decisive blow against the world's largest state sponsor of terror was not without cause or operational cost. Our forces performed their mission with extraordinary precision and professionalism, and we must now ensure they have the resources necessary to replenish critical munitions, sustain readiness, and reinforce the capacity of our military that made such success possible. President Trump's request reflects the reality that our defense strength must be maintained, not merely demonstrated. We look forward to fully reviewing the details of the request with our colleagues. The Appropriations Committee will continue working to ensure our military remains ready, our deterrent remains credible, and our nation is secure.”
