Cole Statement on Passing of Chairwoman Nita M. Lowey
Washington, D.C. – Today, House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole (R-OK) released the below statement:
Chairman Tom Cole (R-OK) said, “It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of former House Appropriations Chairwoman Nita Lowey of New York.
“Nita didn’t wait for history — she made it. As the first woman to lead the House Appropriations Committee, she trailblazed a path of leadership defined by integrity, hard work, and an unyielding dedication to public service. A revered legislator and appropriator, she was a fierce advocate for her values and priorities. She was always a ‘member’s member’ — prepared, professional, and polite, but also pugnacious when the situation required toughness and determination.
“Whether in the many hearings we shared, debates we engaged in, or business at hand — her influence was constant. Notably, during our State and Foreign Operations work, Nita was always a skillful and tactful diplomat when representing our country under both Democrat and Republican administrations. She could defuse contentious situations but throw a hard punch when needed. Indeed, Nita was such a genuinely nice person that others often underestimated her toughness — a mistake that most only made once.
“Nita’s tenacity was always matched by her willingness to work across the aisle, seeking common ground and forging lasting solutions. I am a better lawmaker for knowing her, and America is stronger because of her service. I extend my deepest sympathy to Nita’s beloved husband, Stephen, and her entire family. We have lost a great public servant, and I have lost a dear and valued friend.”
