Cole Statement on Retirement of Appropriator Steny Hoyer

January 8, 2026

Washington, D.C. – Chairman Tom Cole (R-OK) released the following statement after Appropriator and Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee Ranking Member Steny Hoyer (D-MD) announced he is not seeking reelection. The third-longest-serving Member of the House, Hoyer has a storied 60-year career in state and federal politics, and his accomplished tenure is respected by legislators on both sides of the aisle:

Chairman Cole said, "The House of Representatives will feel the absence of Steny Hoyer of Maryland’s Fifth District. He is one of the finest and most formidable Members to serve in this chamber over the last two generations.

"Steny is decent to the core – witty, wise, wily, and engaging. The indelible mark he leaves is not only felt in his personality, but in how the institution was shaped by his voice. He is perhaps the most commanding orator of his generation – respected by all, challenged by the brave. With his long-held magic minute, Members loved to listen to him, but most were reluctant to cross verbal swords with such a skillful debater.

"A genuine and sincere institutionalist, Steny loves the U.S. House of Representatives, its Members, and its staff. And on both sides of the aisle, they loved him back. He has always been quick with a smile and a quip – and his wry sense of humor and ability to laugh at himself made him a joy to work with and be around.

"I always regarded Steny Hoyer the way a good football player looks at a Hall of Famer on the opposing team. I admired him as a world-class player, wished he were on my team, and always knew I had better bring my best game anytime we were facing off on the floor or in committee.

"I wish my colleague, fellow Appropriator, and friend well in the next phase of his life. But I do have one piece of advice – write a book. It will be a corker.

"Steny Hoyer leaves Congress with a sterling reputation. He has a distinguished record of service to his district, his state, his country, and his party. Most importantly, he leaves with an enormous number of friends and admirers who will miss him and the role he has played in the House for over 40 years."
