Lewis Praises “America Speaking Out” Initiative – Says Congress Needs to Listen to the American People on Spending

WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Appropriations Ranking Republican Jerry Lewis today praised the new “America Speaking Out” initiative unveiled by House Republicans, saying that it is critically important that Congress hear what the American people have to say about government spending. Lewis stated that the goal of the project is to gain much-needed insight into the views of Americans across the country on a variety of topics that affect their everyday lives, and solicit their ideas for a new policy agenda for the nation.

“Too often, politicians in Washington get distracted by media reports and polls and do not truly listen to the American people. This new project provides the opportunity for Americans from Redlands to Rochester to express their opinions and weigh in on the many issues and challenges that face our country today,” Lewis said.

Lewis stated that many Americans are rightly concerned with the massive spending approved by the Democrat Congress and the White House.  He noted that the Democrat majority increased non-defense, discretionary spending by over 85% from Fiscal Year 2007 to 2009, and have increased this spending at least another 12% so far for fiscal year 2010.

This website, Lewis said, will allow constituents to articulate where and how they think their tax-dollars should – or should not – be spent.

“Our deficits and debt are at unprecedented and unsustainable levels. We must make significant strides to rein in spending, or America could eventually face a Greek-like financial meltdown,” Lewis said, “This is why it is so important for Members of Congress to listen to what our constituents have to say about which programs they feel are good uses of their hard earned tax dollars, and which programs they think we should cut back or eliminate altogether. It is with this kind of valuable information that we can craft budgets that reflect the real priorities of the American people.”
