Republicans Present a United Front to Responsibly Fund the Government
Washington, D.C. – After House Republicans passed H.R. 5371, the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2026, to responsibly ensure government operations and services remain uninterrupted for the American people, they have remained united in calling on Senate Democrats to join them in preventing a costly government shutdown. Yet, the other side of the aisle continues to make unreasonable demands - endangering vital services for the American people, threatening widespread disruptions, risking furloughs, and jeopardizing military and government workers with missed paychecks - all over issues unrelated to the appropriations process.
Here is a quick recap of what our members have been reiterating.

Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole (R-OK) joined Fox News to discuss work to fund the government, saying, "Leader Schumer is under attack by his own left wing... and he feels like he has to do something, and so there is this desperate effort that could easily lead to a government shutdown. They're demanding things to fund the government for a few weeks at a time. It's simply ridiculous."

Chairman of the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Subcommittee Robert Aderholt (R-AL) posted on X to reiterate the facts: Democrats asked for a clean CR, and then voted against one.

Chairman of the Defense Subcommittee Ken Calvert (R-CA) posted to X previous statements from Democrats preaching the dangers of government shutdowns, quoting former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) as saying, "There is no such thing as a 'good shutdown.'"
Chairman of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Subcommittee Steve Womack (R-AR) said in his "Comment from the Capitol" recap of the week, "The reality is, [a shutdown] hurts the American people, no matter their political stripes. Plus, it's expensive. That's why these shutdowns are nothing but a costly temper tantrum by one side or the other, maybe even both."

Chairman of the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Subcommittee Andy Harris (R-MD) is also highlighting Democrats in their own words, posting a video compilation to social media quoting Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) as saying, "it is not normal to shut down the government when we don't get what we want."

Congressman Dan Newhouse (R-WA) pointed out on X that no one benefits from a shutdown, urging Senate Democrats to make the responsible choice to keep the government open.

Congressman Ben Cline (R-VA) posted President Trump's message to X, highlighting that Democrats are prioritizing insurers over patients with their shutdown strategy.

Vice Chair of the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies Subcommittee Julia Letlow (R-LA) joined One America News to discuss the progress being made on full-year appropriations bills, and how a shutdown would damage that work. She said, "The American people elect us to come up here and work as appropriators to fund the government in regular order."

Congressman Andrew Clyde (R-GA) joined Mornings with Maria on Fox Business to discuss the CR vote in the House and said, "The American people put Republicans in charge. We're the majority now, so we're going to govern, and we're going to do so as fiscally responsible as 218 votes will allow... If Chuck Schumer wants to shut down the government, that's on him."

Vice Chair of the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Subcommittee Mark Alford (R-MO) joined Real America's Voice to underscore the importance of keeping our government open and make sure Americans know just who's to blame for a potential shutdown, saying, "the ball is now in Chuck Schumer's court... This will be a Schumer shutdown, if it happens."
Vice Chair of the Interior, Environment and Related Agencies Subcommittee Celeste Maloy (R-UT) posted to Facebook that "Government shutdowns are not good for the American people," noting that it wasn't long ago that Democrats agreed with that sentiment.

Vice Chair of the Legislative Branch Subcommittee Riley Moore (R-WV) joined Maria Bartiromo on Fox Business to say, "We are trying to bring back regular order, Chuck Schumer and the Democrats are trying to continue business as usual. We have a plan to get this done. The question is whether the Democrats want to shut the government down or not. I don't think that makes a lot of sense for anybody here."
Republicans are continuing the important work the American people elected them to do. Meanwhile, Democrats are steering the country toward a disruptive shutdown. Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats are putting military paychecks and essential services at risk for no reason.
It's time for Democrats to make the responsible choice, listen to their own advice, and vote for the clean CR.
