Cole Remarks at Oversight Hearing on National Guard and Reserves Forces (As Prepared for the Record)
Thank you, Chairman Calvert and Ranking Member McCollum.
Welcome to our distinguished guests and thank you all for answering the call of duty on behalf of our great nation. Let me begin by expressing gratitude to the men and women of the National Guard and Reserve. Your service – while balancing civilian life with military duty – represents the best of our country. All members of Congress see your impact up close, whether it's a deployment abroad or responding to tornadoes or wildfire, you are not just essential to our national defense – you are essential to our communities.
Today’s hearing is an important opportunity to evaluate the current readiness, funding needs, and policy priorities of our Guard and Reserve components. We know that the operational tempo for the Guard and Reserve has grown significantly. These forces are no longer a strategic reserve. They are part of our day-to-day defense operations – from cyber defense to border support to combat deployments.
We owe it to you to ensure that federal funding reflects your operational demands and the critical dual role you serve. I also look forward to hearing about ongoing challenges with recruitment and retention, along with modernization of equipment. I hope for a frank discussion about your needs, your missions, and how Congress can be a true partner in sustaining and strengthening our Guard and Reserve forces.
“Always Ready, Always There” – it’s not just a motto – but a promise you have proven time and again. Whether you are in Oklahoma or serving abroad, our Guardsmen and Reservists deserve to know we have your back. Again, thank you for being here today.
