Cole Remarks at Oversight Hearing on the United States Army

May 7, 2025
Remarks

Thank you, Chairman Calvert and Ranking Member McCollum. This hearing comes at a pivotal moment for our national security, as we face an increasingly complex and volatile global landscape. Among the challenges before us, none looms larger than the rising threat posed by China. With its rapid military modernization, expanding global influence, and assertive posture in the Indo-Pacific, China presents a strategic challenge that demands our full attention and a robust response.

The United States Army plays a critical role in deterring this threat and, if necessary, prevailing in any conflict that may arise. Today, I look forward to hearing how the Army is equipped to address this challenge head-on. We must ensure our forces are postured to counter China’s growing capabilities, particularly in the realm of long-range strategic fires. The ability to strike with precision over vast distances is a necessity to maintain our competitive edge and protect our interests across the globe. I am eager to understand how the Army is prioritizing the development and deployment of these capabilities to keep pace with our adversaries.

Equally critical is the state of our munitions inventory. Recent global conflicts have underscored the importance of a resilient and well-stocked arsenal. We cannot afford to be caught unprepared, whether it’s ensuring an adequate supply of artillery shells, precision-guided munitions, or advanced missile systems. I expect a candid assessment of where we stand today and what investments are needed to bolster our readiness for both the near term and the long haul.

Thank you for being here, and I look forward to a productive discussion. I yield back.
