Valadao Remarks at Budget Hearing on Architect of the Capitol

March 18, 2026
Remarks

The subject of today’s hearing is the Fiscal Year 2027 budget request for the Architect of the Capitol. I’d like to thank Ranking Member Espaillat, Ranking Member DeLauro, subcommittee Members, and our witness, the Architect of the Capitol, Mr. Thomas Austin for being here today.

Mr. Austin, I’d like to start by thanking you and your staff for the work you do to keep the legislative branch of government operational. We are keenly aware that this is not an easy task given the aging nature of the buildings and ever-present budget constraints. Each jurisdiction plays an important role in the operation of this institution and ensures that the people’s House is beautiful, safe, and welcoming to the millions of visitors that will travel to Capitol Hill this year to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday.

The Architect of the Capitol’s Fiscal Year 2027 request is nearly $1.7 billion, a 105 percent increase over the enacted FY 2026 appropriation. Mr. Austin, we look forward to hearing additional details about your sizable request, and I now recognize the Ranking Member for his opening remarks.
