"Today, the Subcommittee will mark up the fiscal year 2012 Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies appropriations bill. The recommendation we bring to the Subcommittee contains $50.2 billion in discretionary spending. This level represents a reduction of 6 percent below the current fiscal year and 13 percent below the President's request. In fact, the recommendation is even 3 percent below the pre-Stimulus fiscal year 2008 spending level.

"I thank the Chairman for yielding, and I congratulate him on completing the FY12 Interior Appropriations Bill. Mr. Simpson, Mr. Moran and staff on both sides have worked tirelessly to bring this important legislation before the subcommittee today.

"Unquestionably our nation has found itself at a crossroads. We're borrowing 40-plus cents on every dollar to support an unprecedented deficit and record-setting debt. This trajectory is simply unsustainable if we are to grow our economy and reverse these startling unemployment trends.

The House Appropriations Committee today released the fiscal year 2012 Legislative Branch Appropriations bill, which will be considered in subcommittee tomorrow. The bill provides annual funding for the offices of Members of the House of Representatives, the support agencies of Congress, services for visitors, and Capitol operations and maintenance.

The House Appropriations Committee today released the fiscal year 2012 Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations bill, which will be considered in subcommittee tomorrow. The bill funds the Department of Commerce, the Department of Justice, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and other related agencies.

House Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers gave the following statement on H.R. 2219, the fiscal year 2012 Defense Appropriations bill, on the floor of the House today:

"Mr. Chairman, I rise today in support of H.R. 2219, the Fiscal Year 2012 Defense Appropriations Bill.

"The nearly $649 billion in total funding contained within this legislation will provide our armed forces with the resources they need for our nation's missions abroad and the protection of our people here at home.

"Welcome everyone to today's Full Committee mark up of the fiscal year 2012 Financial Services and General Government bill.

"The bill before us today matches the Subcommittee's discretionary allocation of $19.9 billion. This allocation is nine percent less than fiscal year 2011, 18 percent less than fiscal year 2010, and 22.5 percent less than the President's request. This reduction resulted in some very tough decisions, but they are necessary to reduce the Federal government's unsustainable level of spending.
