Press Releases
There is no question that if Chairman Obey was permitted to write this bill on his own, it would be a much better product. Instead, the House is being asked to consider a spending bill that reflects the priorities of Speaker Pelosi and a deeply divided Democratic Caucus. If attempts to bridge these widening division over the War in Iraq by delivering billions of dollars in unrelated and unauthorized spending under an emergency designation.
Mr. Chairman and colleagues, I rise this morning to express my opposition to this Emergency Supplemental as it is presently written.

WASHINGTON – CongressmanJerry Lewis , the ranking Republican member of the House Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement regarding the Fiscal Year 2007 Supplemental Spending bill that is vitally needed to support our troops:
Appropriations Committee Ranking Member, Jerry Lewis (R-CA), today announced the Republican ranking members and members of the committee for the 110th Congress. The GOP Steering Committee unanimously approved the ranking member selections earlier today and formal approval by the GOP Conference is expected.
Democrat proposals to require 100 percent screening of air and seaborne cargo will cost tens of billions of dollars in the coming years, and the only way to pay for it will be to dramatically raise fees and taxes, Congressman Jerry Lewis said Tuesday.
Dead of Night, No One in Sight – Democrat Leaders Negotiate Secret Stimulus
WASHINGTON, D.C. – After months of proclamations of bipartisanship and increased transparency, the Democrat majority has fully abandoned these reasonable goals in order to bypass open conference negotiations on the “stimulus” legislation and jam the massive bill through Congress.
One of the major flaws of both the House and Senate stimulus packages is the lack of a clear description of how these funds will actually be spent by federal agencies. While Senate attempts to reduce the size and improve the package should be applauded, many of the pots of “stimulus” money in the bill still receive little or no specific legislative direction. This is yet another example of why the current stimulus plan should be scraped and the crafting of the plan should go back to square one.
