Chairman Rogers Commemorates Former Chairman and Defense Subcommittee Chairman C.W. Bill Young
House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers gave the following statement on the House floor in memory of former Committee Chairman C.W. Bill Young, who passed away on October 18, 2013:
"I rise today with a heavy heart to honor the memory and service of my dear friend and colleague, Bill Young.
"Bill served the House and this country for decades, with compassion and distinction. I have not known this institution without him, and I believe it will take a long time to fill the hole his absence has left.
"As an appropriator, he was a role model. When I became Chairman of the Committee, I knew I had some large shoes to fill, following in the footsteps of Chairman Young, among others. He fought with determination and enthusiasm to make this country a better place.
"Bill was a champion for our troops and veterans – both in the halls of the Capitol and outside. His fierce dedication to our troops and veterans never wavered. He was often found with his dear wife Beverly visiting with troops and military personnel.
"He was, of course, Chairman of the Defense Subcommittee for many years, and he also served on the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Subcommittee; his thumbprint is visible in the improved medical care and quality of life of our troops – among the many other issues that he held dear to his heart.
"Bill was a leader in this House, who was able to make his mark with grace and fortitude.
"I will miss his presence greatly, as I know my colleagues will as well. My prayers are with his family, his many friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.
"Thank you."
