Diaz-Balart Remarks During Floor Consideration of H.R. 7217, The Israel Security Supplemental Appropriations Act

Feb 6, 2024

I rise in support of the Israel Security Supplemental Appropriations Act to provide much-needed assistance to our democratic and unwavering ally, Israel, as it combats terrorism against its citizens.

I commend my colleague, Chairman Ken Calvert, for his leadership in drafting this critical legislation, as well as Chairwoman Kay Granger. I want to thank Speaker Mike Johnson and Majority Leader Steve Scalise for bringing this bill to the House floor.

As Mr. Calvert just said, there has been genocide, but the genocide has been from Hamas. If the world needed yet another reminder of the importance of Israel as a safe haven for the Jewish people, then the heinous attacks on innocent men, women, children – even babies – of October 7 should be that wake-up call. This is not that complicated.

I was disgusted and shocked by the sheer glee displayed in celebrations across the world, including the United States and Europe, to the torture and slaughter of innocents. And remember: these grotesque celebrations happened before Israel began its military actions in Gaza. Let’s be clear, these celebrations were and are in favor of the terrorists of Hamas. The despicable antisemitism, which has dramatically increased since October 7th must be confronted and condemned.

Israel is the front line in the battle against terrorism. The terrorists of Hamas, Hezbollah, ISIS, Iran, Syria, and more are forever awaiting any opportunity to strike at Israel. And the very terrorists that seek Israel’s destruction also call for ours. Israel does not want violence or war. Neither does the United States. The problem is that the terrorists do.

Last November, the House passed another Israel Security Supplemental which was fully offset by a rescission of the IRS funding taken out of the Inflation Expansion Act. The White House opposed the bill then and opposes it again now.

There are zero excuses to oppose this bill. This bill does one thing: it provides urgently needed funding for our friend and ally, Israel, to defeat the terrorists they are dealing with, and supports U.S. Forces in the region.

The United States must stand with Israel in eradicating terrorism, and condemns the violence, hatred, and antisemitism. This is not that complicated. This bill stands with Israel: no ifs, ands, or buts. I am grateful to Chairman Calvert for bringing forward this important piece of legislation and I wholeheartedly support it.
