WASHINGTON, DC - Reps Mac Thornberry (R-TX), Kay Granger (R-TX) and Steve Womack (R-AR), Republican leaders of the House Armed Services, Appropriations, and Budget Committees respectively, issued a stark warning to their colleagues today on the damage a full-year continuing resolution would do to America's military.
WASHINGTON – Top Appropriations Committee Republican Kay Granger (R-TX) released the following statement after Chairwoman Nita Lowey (D-NY) announced that she is not seeking reelection in 2020. The two currently serve as the first female Republican Ranking Member and first female Committee Chair of the panel respectively.
"The retirement of Nita Lowey is a huge loss for our country, the Congress, our committee, and me personally. Nita has served as a dedicated public servant in Congress for 31 years, and the nation – especially the people of New York – are better for it.
"Mr. Speaker, I rise today in support of H.R. 4378 – a continuing resolution that will fund the government through November 21st.
"It is unfortunate that we are in this situation and have to pass this CR to keep the government open, but we cannot afford an unnecessary and costly shutdown.
"Because the budget agreement did not get enacted until August, the Senate just began working on the FY20 appropriations bills last week.
"As a result, there is simply not enough time to complete the appropriations process by the September 30th deadline.
